An abscess is a localized collection of pus. Abscesses interfere with the normal functioning of the affected areas or organs. It can cause fever, localized pain, swelling or redness. It can be formed in tonsils, skin surfaces, thyroid, head, teeth, abdomen, pelvis or anywhere in the body due to infection.
Skin abscesses are detected by physical exam. In some situations, diagnostic tests are required if internal organs are affected.
An abscess can be treated by abscess drainage, antibiotics, painkillers or other supportive measures like rehydration after evaluation of cause and location.
