DENGUE – Causes and Symptoms and Diagnosis

What is Dengue ?

Dengue is an infection which is caused by a virus. You can get it if an infected mosquito bites you. Dengue does not spread from person to person.  Outbreaks occur in the rainy season. Don’t ignore if you have the symptoms. Visit clinic near by to get treatment by family doctor.

Some facts about Dengue:

  • Around 2.5 billion people, or 40 percent of the world’s population, live in areas where there is a risk of its transmission.
  • Dengue is endemic in at least 100 countries in Asia, the Pacific, the Americas, Africa, and the Caribbean.
  • Symptoms of Dengue usually begin 4 to 7 days after the mosquito bite and typically last 3 to 10 days.
  • Effective treatment is possible if a clinical diagnosis is made early.

Signs and Symptoms

In many cases, symptoms will be mild. Some people do mistakes by understanding them the symptoms of the flu or another infection . Young children and people who have never experienced infection because of it may have a milder illness than older children and adults. Symptoms generally last for about 10 days and can include:

  • sudden, high fever (up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • severe headache
  • swollen lymph glands
  • severe joint and muscle pains
  • skin rash (appearing between two and five days after the initial fever)
  • mild to severe nausea, vomitting, bleeding from gums, bruising of skin
  • febrile convulsions
  • Low white cell count
  • cold

Causes

Dengue hemorrhagic fever can occur when mosquito bites someone or they are exposed to blood infected with the its virus. Infected mosquitoes are the most common causes.

There are four different types of the dengue virus. Once you are infected with one of the viruses, you develop immunity to that virus for the rest of your life. However, this immunity will not probably protect you from the other viruses. It is possible to be infected with all four different types of the  virus in your lifetime.

Repeated exposure to the  virus can make it more likely that you will develop dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Diagnosing dengue fever can be difficult, because its signs and symptoms can be easily confused with those of other diseases — such as malaria, leptospirosis and typhoid fever.

Your doctor will likely ask about your medical and travel history. Be sure to describe international trips in detail, including the countries you visited and the dates, as well as any contact you may have had with mosquitoes.

Certain laboratory tests can detect evidence of the viruses, but test results usually come back too late to help direct treatment decisions.
