Chlamydia infection mostly occurs in urogenital organs. In men, it causes difficulty in urination and white discharges from the genitals; if not treated properly, it turns into epididymis.
Chlamydial infections in women show minimal or no symptoms, and may result in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The symptoms start during or within the first two weeks of menses causing high fever, slight abdominal pain, difficult urination, long menses or intermenstrual bleeding.
Newborns may catch the infection from affected mothers resulting in eye infection. Infants below three months of age may develop chlamydial pneumonia.
Chlamydial infections might complicate into Reiter syndrome. It can be treated with an antibiotics course based on the site of the infection, the age of the patient, or complications present alongside the infection. In pregnancy, treatment is different. The patient is advised to avoid sex for seven days during treatment.
